Promoting Healthy Eating Choices For Children
Dr. James Stowitts knows that In today’s world of abundance and food availability, it is hard to make good choices for you and your family. Children are notoriously picky eaters, and some of this stems from the lack of variety they are given in their early years. Healthy eating is a good habit that will last a lifetime. This habit reduces the risk of obesity and obesity related illnesses such as cardiovascular disease as well as others. Older children as well as adults should strive to consume five servings of fruit and vegetables every day. These can include fruits, traditional vegetables, beans and lentils and canned fruit packed in 100% water. Be sure to give younger children vegetables before they become acquainted with fruit. Once a child favors the sweeter taste of fruits, it is hard to convince them to eat their vegetables. Introduce vegetables as early as possible for best results. Limit sweetened drinks like soft drinks, juice and sports drinks as much as possible, says Dr. James Stowitts. As a dentist, Dr. Stowitts knows these drinks have many unnecessary calories and sugars for young children. Serving actual fruit is better for everyone because it contains the fiber, vitamins and nutrients that are needed for a healthy body.Healthy eaters use the USDA Healthy Food Plate motto of “coloring” half of your plate with fruits and non starchy vegetables. A quarter is reserved for starchy foods like rice, bread or potatoes. The remaining quarter is reserved for protein. Choosing lean protein such as chicken, lean beef and fish will help the growth and development of your child. Healthy eating is not being ultra strict with your food choices but choosing to make better choices more often. Choose healthy snacks for school lunches whenever possible. Foods such as sandwiches made on whole grain bread increase fiber, folate and Vitamin B intake. Greek yogurt is a great source of protein as well as dairy. Exchange fresh vegetables like carrots and celery in place of chips with the lunches to promote healthy habits. Dr. James Stowitts says to encourage healthy eating in your children, have regular family meals, eat a variety of foods, and be a role model for your child. Your child will eat what they see you eating. Involve your child in food selection and the preparation process, teaching them about food at a younger age. If a child does not like a “healthy food,” continue offering the food to them. As a child grows, their tastes change. It is only good for you if you actually eat it. Portion control is a major issue for everyone. Teach children to eat from smaller dinner plates to control the actual portions you are serving. Avoid using food as reward or punishment. This will reinforce bad habits as an adult when life becomes more stressful. Healthy eating is a lifelong commitment. Dr. James Stowitts wants you to know that arming your children with healthy habits early on will only reinforce this habit as an adult. With the amount of unhealthy options available for children in the supermarkets it is an uphill battle. Peer pressure at school will bring “junk food” cravings in your child home that you will have to educate and control. Explaining why they should choose better foods is more effective rather than just forbidding them from your home. Research “healthy” alternatives for some of the “junk food” you child craves. You and your child can create healthy replacements at home. No one wants to feel left out and your versions of these foods will allow your child to feel included with their classmates. Following these simple healthy eating guidelines will aid your child in a life of wellness in the future. Dr. James Stowitts DDS.
